There are several options for undertaking UAS operations under the Specific Category. All of these include requirements concerning the pilot, the operator and the UAS. This course covers the requirements for pilots implementing the EASA Standard Scenarios.

The operator also needs to decide how to apply to ILT for a permit for these operations. The application can be based on a PDRA (PreDefined Risk Assessment) following the EASA or JARUS SORA risk approach, or on an EASA Standard Scenario (STS). The pilot flying the operation has to hold the required STS theory and practice certificates.

The EU UAS Pilot Course STS-01 covers the theory and practice to prepare the pilot for Specific Category operations which fulfil the requirements for Standard Scenario 1 (STS-01). This course, the course materials and the exams are all in English, as this is the language commonly used in aviation in Europe and beyond.

The requirements for an STS-01 mission include:

  • The flight is undertaken within visual line of sight of the pilot.
  • The speed over ground is less than 18 km/h.
  • The UAS operator has an approved manual for STS-01 operations.
  • The operation is undertaken over a controlled area.
  • The pilot is certified to undertake STS-01 flights.

There are many further requirements for the operation, operator, pilot and UAS. The course given by the Dutch Drone Academy enables the pilot to be certified for STS-01 UAS operations. It includes theory and practical training and exams, for which separate certificates are issued.

Before starting this course, the pilot must have completed the full Open Category training. For this reason items 6, 7 and 8 of the STS-01 theory course are not required, as this material is covered in the A2 Open Category course.

  1. Aviation regulations
  2. Human performance limitations
  3. Operational procedures
  4. Technical and operational mitigations for ground risk
  5. UAS general knowledge
  6. Meteorology
  7. Flight performance of the UAS
  8. Technical and operational mitigations for air risks

The mandatory elements of the practical part of this course include:

  • Pre-flight actions
  • In-flight procedures
  • Real-time monitoring of the UAS status and endurance limitations
  • Flight under abnormal conditions
  • Post-flight actions – Responsibilities of the operator and the pilot (before and during flight)

By the end of this course the trainees should have very good, even excellent, control over their UAS. To estimate your training requirements and discuss all aspects of the envisaged UAS operations an intake meeting, either in person or via a video call, is required. We can arrange this with you, without obligation.

To give you a better idea of the costs we have developed a fixed price basic package. However, if you need additional training then the costs may be higher. After the intake meeting and acceptance of the quote, the basic package of the EU Drone Pilot Course STS-01 includes:

  • Open Category A1/A3 course and exam (if not yet completed)
  • Open Category A2 course and exam (if not yet completed)
  • EU Drone Pilot Support Package (supporting documents)
